Description

Mussoorie is one of the hill station in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. It is situated about 33 kms from the capital of Dehradun and 286 kms from New Delhi. Mussoorie is a very beautiful place and is located in the peaks of the Himalayan range known as Garhwal. It is a very attractive hill station which is situated at an elevation of 1,878 metres, has diverse fauna, flora and green hills. It is called the entrance to Gangotri and Yamunotri temples of North India. One of the biggest rink of roller skating is also situated in Mussoorie. From Mussoorie one can have magnificent view of Shiwalik ranges & Doon Valley. It is a very good place for tourists to visit with a very pleasant atmosphere and snow ranges. Another summit is the Lal Tibba, Landour, with an average altitude of above 2,272 metres. Mussoorie is a popular destination for honeymooning couples, mostly because of its comparatively cool climes and peaceful and lovely atmosphere.

TOURISM OF MUSSOORIE

Tourism is the only major source of livelihood for the people of Mussoorie. Important tourist attractions of Mussoorie are –

  • Lal Tibba
    Lal Tibba is the highest point in Mussoorie, with views over the town and its surroundings. A Japanese telescope, with views of Himalayan ranges comprising Kedarnath, Banderpunch, Badrinath, was installed in the year 1967 at Lal Tibba.
     
  • Nag Devta Temple
    The ancient Nag Devta Temple is devoted to Snake God Lord Shiva, It is on Cart Mackenzie Road about 7 km from Mussoorie on Dehradun Road. There is vehicular access to the shrine, which offers amazing views of Doon Valley and Mussoorie.
     
  • Mall Road
    Mall Road, with architectural facts of a colonial past, is a shopping area at the centre of Mussoorie, and encloses cafes, a Methodist church skating rinks, shops, a nearby Tibetan market place, and video game establishments.
     
  • Happy Valley
    Happy Valley is situated on the western region of Library Point. The tourist spots comprises a municipal garden, Tibetan sanctuaries, and the IAS Academy. 
     
  • Mussoorie Lake
    Mussoorie Lake is 5 km from Mussoorie on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road. Mussoorie Lake provide pedal boats and amazing views of adjacent villages and Doon Valley.
     
  • Lake Mist
    Lake Mist is situated about 5 km from Kempty Falls on the Mussoorie-Kempty road, through which flows the Kempty River with several small waterfalls. The resort of Lake Mist offers accommodation, restaurant facilities and boating.
     
  • Jwalaji Temple (Benog Hill)
    Jwalaji Temple is situated 10 km west from Mussoorie, it cannot be reachable by vehicle although a motor road goes most of the way from Mussoorie. Jwalaji Temple is situated at an elevation of 2,242 m, it is at the top of Benog Hill and encloses a statue of the Goddess Durga; Jwalaji Temple provides an amazing view of the valley of the Aglar River.
     
  • Bhatta Falls
    Bhatta Falls are situated 8 km from Mussoorie on the Mussoorie-Dehradun Road near Bhatta Village. The falls are 2.5 km by foot from Bhatta.
     
  • Van Chetna Kendra
    Van Chetna Kendra is a sanctuary built in the year 1993, which is situated about 1 km to the south from Library Point. It is famous for the vanished bird species Mountain Quail (Pahari Bater), last spotted in the year 1876.
     
  • St Mary's Church
    St Mary's Church is the oldest Christian church in the Himalayas, it is situated above Mall Road.
     
  • Cloud End
    Cloud End was constructed in the year 1838 by a British major. Cloud End was one of the first four buildings in Mussoorie and has been renovated to a hotel. Cloud End is enclosed by thick deodar forest.
     
  • Kempty Falls
    The Kempty Falls, 13 m high and 1,400 m above sea level, is 16 km from Mussoorie, reachable by track from Kempty Fall Road.
     
  • Municipal Garden
    Municipal Garden has an artificial mini-lake with paddle boats. It is 5 km by road transport and 3 km via Waverly Convent School Road on foot.
     
  • Mossy Fall
    Mossy Fall is situated is 7 km from Mussoorie, it is enclosed by a dense forest and is reachable via Balahisar or Barlowganj.
     
  • Sir George Everest's House
    Sir George Everest’s House is about 7 km from Gandhi Chowk and a scenic walk from Library Bazaar, although reachable by road transport to at least Haathi Paon. It offers a view of Doon Valley on one side and a scenic view of the Aglar River basin and the peaks of the Himalayan ranges on the other.
     
  • Nahata Estate
    Nahata Estate, situated 5 kms from the tourist office, is the highest peak of Mussoorie close to Lal Tibba with mountain views.
     
  • Dhanaulti
    Dhanaulti is a hill station situated about 25 kms away from Mussoorie. Snow-covered Garhwal Himalayas and Doon Valley and can be seen from there.
     
  • Gun Hill
    Gun Hill is the 2nd main point of Mussoorie after Lal Tibba, at an elevation of 2,024 m and is reachable by cable car from the Mall road. So this place is known as Gun Hill.
     
  • Jharipani Fall
    Jharipani Fall is situated 9 kms from Mussoorie on the Mussoorie-Jharipani Road.
     
  • Benog Wildlife Sanctuary
    Benog Wildlife Sanctuary is situated around 10 kms from Library Point and open to the public, it offers a woodland surroundings for native animals and birds.
     
  • Camel's Back Road
    Camel's Back Road takes its name from a rocky outcrop in the form of a camel's hump, encloses hotels, motels, and a cemetery. One can enjoy a nature walk on Camel’s Back Road.
